No, library materials need to be either checked out or re-shelved. This allows all users to know where the library materials are. Items kept "behind the counter" show as available in the library catalog which is misleading because they are not available for other users.

As long as you have your GUID and your account is in good standing, you can ask the staff member at the Circulation desk to place the item on hold.
